PAST EVENTS
Launch
of the “Hispanic Ontario
Lawyers Association
Endowment Fund” a Success
On the evening of October
10, 2006, the Hispanic
Ontario Lawyers Association
(HOLA) launched the HOLA
Endowment Fund which will
provide annual and perpetual
bursaries for
Spanish-speaking students
enrolled at Osgoode Hall Law
School. The event, named
“Abriendo Puertas: Opening
Doors,” was held at the
prestigious Albany Club, and
was attended by over 30
people, including lawyers,
law students, community and
business leaders, and the
media. The HOLA Endowment
Fund is the first bursary
program intended to benefit
the Hispanic community in
Canada.
The evening started with
a Welcome address from
Sandra Lozano, HOLA’s
Director of Public
Relations. Ms. Lozano
remarked on the importance
of Hispanics working
together for the good of
their community. She thanked
the Event Sponsors, Mr.
Richard Baker and Mr. Juan
Carranza, both Hispanic
lawyers, and the various
Hispanic media for their
support.
Lozano then introduced
Guillermo Schible, HOLA’s
Vice President and
Fundraising Director of the
HOLA Endowment Fund. Mr.
Schible noted that:
“The Cuban poet and
revolutionary José Martí
advises us that, before
dying, we write a book, have
a child, and plant a tree.
This Endowment at Osgoode
Hall Law School is our tree.
If all goes well, we will
plant a similar tree in
every law school in this
Province. But, as someone
else said, little feet must
take little steps. So today,
all we can do is thank you
for being here to help us
water our first tree.”
Schible introduced Ms.
Anita Herrmann, Director of
the Office of Advancement at
Osgoode Hall Law School. Ms.
Herrman thanked HOLA for
establishing its first Fund
at Osgoode. She explained
that the HOLA Fund is a
great opportunity for anyone
to contribute any amount, as
the government will match
all donations
dollar-for-dollar. She added
that the donations are also
tax deductible and that
Osgoode will issue
individual tax receipts to
all donors.
Mr. Joe Janthur, Albany
Club member was the
evening’s host. Mr. Janthur
made moving remarks on the
historical importance of the
room “Abriendo Puertas” was
held in. It was the very
same room in which Sir John
A.
McDonald formulated his
first plans to form the
country that we now call
Canada. Mr. Janthur brought
out an antique leather chair
once used by Sir John A.
McDonald and suggested that
Ms. Lozano, who was sitting
on the chair at the time,
could become a Prime
Minister of Canada.
The final speaker was Mr.
Milé Komlen, Chair of the
Law Society of Upper
Canada’s Equity Advisory
Group, which works to
develop policies and
initiatives to further
diversity and equality in
the legal profession. Mr.
Komlen cited statistics that
indicate that Hispanic
lawyers make up only 0.2% of
the lawyers in Ontario
(between 60-65 lawyers in
the whole
Province.) He added that the
HOLA Endowment Fund is a
positive step in increasing
those numbers.
Mr. Schible delivered
closing statements, noting
that two pledges have been
received: $250 from Gary
Hodder and $2,500 from Juan
Carranza!!!
Thank you all for helping
HOLA open doors!
